Serpae Tetra are, like other tetras, outstanding community fish and an exceptional choice for any starting tank or beginner aquarist. They are an easy to keep fish and are hardy. They mix well with other minute fish and are also eye catching to look at. They grow to about 2.2 inches in length.
The color of the Serpae Tetra body is ranges from a bright red to reddish brown. There is a black spot found behind the gill cover. This spot generally becomes smaller as the fish gets older. The Serpae Tetra dorsal fin is black with white fringing. It is quite a tall fin as well. Sometimes the fin has a red hue to it, although this can differ among the species. The Serpae Tetra is red as are the ventral and anal fins.
Serpae Tetra generally swim in the middle and bottom areas of the tank. They generally leave other fish alone and enjoy chasing each other around.
Serpae Tetra originate from South America, Peru and the Amazon River basin. They are a silky fish and are quite tall and compressed. The females are a little more rounded than the male Serpae Tetra.
Serpae Tetra are uncomplicated to feed. They take flakes, live, freeze dried and frozen foods. It is wise to vary their diet. Sometimes when there is a large school of Serpae Tetra, they will nip each others fins as they all grab for food. Some people say not to mix Serpae Tetra with Neon Tetra as the Serpae's can be a little feisty. Use your own discretion when mixing these fish, as some Serpae Tetra are extremely gentle.
